  • Character Over Everything: The John Wooden Standard

Character Over Everything: The John Wooden Standard

Ask anyone around Oliver Gilliam and the basketball comes second. His bio leads with John Wooden: “What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player.”

His high-school geometry teacher, Ryan Mason, put it this way: “What sets Oliver apart is his character. He is respectful, thoughtful, and mature… he brings the same determination to his sport as he does his studies.”

It shows up in his 3.5 GPA and in his decision to give back through free youth training. For programs recruiting culture as much as talent, that’s the differentiator. Meet Oliver.

Dream 34 Hoops: My Club Basketball Journey

High-school basketball builds the foundation; club ball builds the exposure. Oliver Gilliam competes on the travel and showcase circuit with Dream 34 Hoops, the program that puts him in front of college staffs outside the Salem High School season.

From the Puma Circuit to camps and showcases, the club circuit is where production turns into recruitment — and it’s a big reason Oliver already holds a college offer and interest from 20+ programs.

  • Why I’m Hosting Free Summer Basketball Training

Why I’m Hosting Free Summer Basketball Training

“Basketball has opened doors in my life — and I believe in using it to create opportunities for others.” This summer, Oliver Gilliam is hosting free basketball training for kids in his community, especially those who may lack resources or confidence.

The sessions cover ball-handling, shooting, and footwork; game fundamentals and basketball IQ; and most of all, a confidence-building environment with real mentorship. “To whom much is given, much will be required.” — Luke 12:48.

It’s the clearest expression of his character-first approach. Details and sign-ups: see Giving Back or get in touch.

  • Student-Athlete First: A 3.5 GPA and a Full-Time Game

    Student-Athlete First: A 3.5 GPA and a Full-Time Game

Talent opens doors; academics keep them open. Oliver Gilliam carries a 3.5 GPA, and that matters more than people think in recruiting — it makes him eligible across every academic tier, from Ivy League interest (Cornell) to selective Division III programs like Washington University in St. Louis, while keeping the full Division I and II picture open.

The same discipline that built his game shows up in the classroom. As his bio puts it (quoting John Wooden): “What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player.”

The Dream Vertical: Inside the Highlight Reel

Film is the currency of recruiting, and Oliver’s #22 Dream Vertical reel is the fastest way to see what a 6’8″ positionless guard looks like in motion — scoring at all three levels, facilitating, rebounding, and defending.

  • Playoff Basketball as a Sophomore: Salem’s Region 4D Run

Playoff Basketball as a Sophomore: Salem’s Region 4D Run

One of the clearest signals in any recruit’s profile is production against real competition — early. Oliver Gilliam delivered it, contributing as an underclassman to Salem High School’s run to the VHSL Region 4D quarterfinals (covered by the Roanoke Times in February 2026) and ranking among the team’s leading scorers.

Producing in playoff basketball before his junior year is exactly the trajectory college staffs track. It’s the on-court foundation behind his early college interest.

Great players are built, not born — and Oliver Gilliam has been built by some of the best. His development team includes Aaron Dotson (LSU), Lawrence Borha (University of Utah, Pac-12), Christoffer Collins (NBA skills trainer), and Scott Spencer (Clemson, Tulane, La Salle, international), along with Mackenzie Lewis of Hoop Love Academy (94Feet certified, USA Basketball licensed).

He’s also completed a full skill-set evaluation session with Paul Biancardi, ESPN’s national recruiting analyst.

That exposure shaped a fluid, intelligent, European-style game. Meet the full team on the Player Development page, and see the work on film.

  • What “Positionless” Means at 6’8″

    What “Positionless” Means at 6’8″

Modern basketball rewards players who don’t fit one box. At 6’8″, Oliver Gilliam brings guard skills — elite vision, passing, and polished footwork — to a frame that can also post up and protect the rim. That’s what “positionless” really means: the ability to play and defend multiple spots, 1 through 4.

    Why it matters for recruiting

A 6’8″ player who can run an offense and create his own shot forces defensive mismatches and gives a coaching staff lineup flexibility. With a projected frame of 6’10″–7’0″, Oliver’s ceiling grows with him — the skills stay, the size increases.

His European-influenced game was shaped by elite trainers, and it shows up on film. See the full recruiting profile.

Meet Oliver Gilliam: 6’8″ Positionless Guard, Class of 2028

Oliver Gilliam, 6'8 class of 2028 guard, shooting in a game for Salem High School

At 6’8″ with a 6’10” wingspan and the ball skills of a guard, Oliver Gilliam is exactly the kind of prospect college programs look for: positionless, skilled, and still growing (projected 6’10″–7’0″). A class-of-2028 student-athlete at Salem High School in Salem, Virginia, he pairs a complete, European-influenced game with a 3.5 GPA.

Oliver scores at all three levels, rebounds, defends, and facilitates — creating mismatches every time he steps on the floor. He plays varsity for Salem and club basketball for Dream 34 Hoops, and he’s already drawing real college interest.

But what sets him apart is his approach. His bio leads with a John Wooden line about character over basketball, and he’s putting it into action by hosting free summer training for kids in his community.
